Personal Branding and Social Media in Job Searches
I attended a terrific presentation by Gary Alan Miller from the Career Development Center at UNC-CH. He talked through the many uses and tools in social media for accelerating a job search. Here’s a link to his slide show. It’s a great big world out there, AND it’s getting more like a small hometown everyday with old fashioned ideas like reputation, integrity, and “who you know” coming back into play. Enjoy!

It is true! Social networks are the new meeting point and market place for all of us. This presentation it is very insightful. I would like to ask Gary about how to manage of all this information and get the most from the different tools. Maybe next time!

This is very important information, whether you’re job hunting or in business for yourself. The principles for online branding are much the same for both.
While you’re developing a rhythm and schedule for increasing your own online visibility, be sure do what Chris Brogan (ChrisBrogan.com) calls “growing ears.” Set up Google Alerts for your name and any keywords about which you’re vitally interested (e.g., your industry, your job title, your area of expertise). Do the same in Twitter with Twitter Search or SocialOomph. Find out what’s being said out there about you and the things about which you’re most interested. This opens up opportunities for online dialogue through which you can add value to your online communities and increase your visibility at the same time.
Listen, add value and build trust long before you start promoting yourself or your products and services.
